Mr. Murphy was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Talking Rock, the son of the late, Elbert C., Sr. and Laura Jane (Hensley) Murphy. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, was a farmer for many years, later was employed at Union Carbide, where he retired, enjoyed gardening and was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beulah Mae (Cagle) Murphy; his son, James Larry Murphy; and two sisters, Anice Murphy and Bernice Stafford.
Surviving are his children, Gloria and Sam Graham of Cartersville, George and Lorna Murphy of Waleska, Fred and Debbie Murphy of Hortonville, Wis., Joel and Ann Murphy of Cartersville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Eunice Stewart of Cartersville, John and Bonnie Murphy of Cartersville; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Raccoon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Harold Elrod officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
