Barber has been spending Saturdays punting the ball away for the No. 3-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
On Fridays, he often wishes he could don the uniform of his former high school football team the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes - one more time.
“To be part of this year’s Canes’ team would be great,” said Barber following a Tuesday afternoon practice.
“I still have a lot of great memories playing for coach Barden.”
Those memories began as a high school freshman and concluded as a senior last fall.
Heading into the weekend, Barber’s former high school team was 12-0 and playing in the third round of the Class AAA state playoffs against the No. 1-ranked Thomson Bulldogs.
His current team, the 11-1 Georgia Bulldogs, will be playing for the SEC championship against the No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and a chance to win college’s version of a national championship Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
“It has been a thrill playing for the Bulldogs and following Cartersville at the same time,” said the Bulldogs’ 6-2, 200 lb. freshman punter. “I have family and friends back home who I stay in touch with constantly.”
