Also on Monday, the board will vote on an agenda item to increase student breakfast and lunch costs by 10 cents and 15 cents, respectively, across all grade levels.
“[The federal government] is saying we have to raise our prices to comply with the food/nutrition lunch policies ... and that price doesn’t affect students who qualify for free or reduced lunch,” Harper said during the work session. “None of us like meal price increases, ... but it’s not our choice.”
Another agenda item calls for a 25-cent increase in the cost of adult meals.
In other school news, the board will vote on an item Monday to continue to assist in funding of a vocational rehabilitation counselor at the cost of $13,000. The remaining $48,033 will be paid for by a federal grant.
According to the board’s agenda information, “The Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Department of Labor’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program provide local districts the opportunity to utilize a vocational rehabilitation counselor to work with students with disabilities ages 16-21. This falls under transition requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended by the 1998 Workforce Investment Act.
“Federal rehabilitation funds have been available since 1994 to assist local school districts in providing required support to eligible students through a Federal match grant. The VR Program uses a team approach that includes assessment, training, work preparation, job accommodations, assistive work technology and job counseling. This support is in place to assist students in preparing for work opportunities after they have completed high school. Not all students between 16 and 21 will receive support by this service; however, the supports are available based on the recommendations of the students’ IEP teams.”
The board will hold its regular business session Monday at 6 p.m. in the central office boardroom. The agenda and accompanying information can be viewed at www.bartow.k12.ga.us, and residents may now sign up for public participation online.
