Superintendent John Harper would not provide his proposal to The Daily Tribune News, but said the board will discuss his proposal prior to a vote.
“[I will] let [the board] share their thoughts with me on what we’ve proposed. Those are five people that may want to tweak that and change that some because of information they have or they have gotten, but once [the proposal] gets out there, people hear the initial stories and if it changes, then they’ll make changes based on what they hear first and not what they hear second ...,” Harper said. “There will be further discussion — that’s the purpose for taking it to the board to say ‘Here’s the proposal, this is what I’m recommending for us to be able to make up some time and [I] ask your support with that,’ — then the chairman will open it up for discussion.”
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the central office boardroom, 65 Gilreath Road, Cartersville.
In other news, Bartow schools also are moving forward with construction upgrades to Hamilton Crossing Elementary School and White Elementary School. Harper said on Monday while workers are on site at the two elementary schools, the construction will not interfere with class time or student activities.
“What we’ve done is fence off an area for the construction folks, we’ve done that in the past, and there won’t be an interference with instruction while that’s going on and it will be very safe for our kids,” Harper said following Monday’s business session. “One of the things you see that is taking place at White Elementary, because we’re going to put in a temporary playground out in front by the track, we’ve fenced in that entire area in preparing for the construction that’s going to be going on in the back ... because they won’t be able to use [the playground] in the back.”
The board on Monday approved its consent agenda, which included the following:
• The budgeted purchase of up to $52,683 in School Nutrition Services software from SNS Cafe Computer Hardware to “improve operational efficiency by integrating all management functions into one program,” according to the agenda.
• Approval of furniture, fixtures and construction contingencies for additions and renovations at Hamilton Crossing Elementary School and White Elementary School in the amount of $995,500, to be paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds.
• The purchase of six bus bodies and chassis in the amount of $93,034 to be paid for with state bus bonds and bus replacement reserves.
• The purchase of 150 MacBook Air laptops for fourth- and fifth-grade students, 35 13-inch MacBook Air laptops for teachers and administration, and 56 iMac desktop computers for administration, the media center and one computer lab at the new Emerson Elementary School in the amount of $224,406 to be paid for with SPLOST funds.
• The purchase of HP network switches for the new Emerson Elementary School in the amount of $42,380 to be paid for with SPLOST funds.
• The purchase of 43 Epson 475wi projectors with Promethean ActiveInspire Software and wall mounts for classrooms, the media center and conference rooms at the new Emerson Elementary School in the amount of $76,213 to be paid for with SPLOST funds.
