A suspect in a Wednesday afternoon armed robbery has been captured.

According to a Bartow County Sheriff’s Office release, John Anderson Gibbs was arrested Wednesday at Cartersville Medical Center after police say he robbed a disabled woman.

About 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, a 58-year-old disabled woman had a friend call 911 after she said a “trusted” neighbor who assists the victim had robbed her, according to the release. The incident report said the woman recognized the man’s voice and she allowed him to use the phone. Gibbs then allegedly asked for money, which the woman said she did not have.

The victim told police Gibbs then said, “I’m not asking. I’m demanding,” and shoved a cold, hard, circular object into her side. Because of her handicap, the woman could not identify the object.

She told deputies that she tried to escape but the offender pulled her back into the living room where he searched her purse and stole her cellphone, purse and home phone. She was not injured in the incident.

A Bartow County Sheriff's Office patrol deputy spotted Gibbs’s truck late Wednesday at Cartersville Medical Center and located him inside being treated for a suspected drug overdose.

Investigators have charged Gibbs, 42, of Grove Circle in Cartersville, with armed robbery. He is still being treated at the hospital but is in custody of the Bartow County Sheriff's Office. More charges are likely to come from the incident.

Man arrested for child sex crime during warrant service

A BCSO deputy assisting agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals arrested a Surrey Lane man after child porn was discovered during a warrant check.

According to the deputy’s report, Erik Christopher Vogelsang, 39, became irate when officers attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

It was determined through interviewing another resident that Vogelsang had access to a computer, which the resident gave officers permission to search. Officers located several pornographic images of underage children on the computer.

Vogelsang was arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of children.

Home lost in early morning fire

A mobile home Thursday morning was destroyed by fire.

According to Bartow County Fire Department Capt. Ben Blevins, units from stations 1, 2, 7 and 12 were called to the home on Sugar Valley Road about 6 a.m.

The blaze began in the rear of the home around the kitchen but the cause is unknown, Blevins said.

The home is “unlivable” and will be deemed a total loss, he said, adding that a resident was home but uninjured.

Crews closed Sugar Valley Road for three hours to allow for a supply line to access the house.
