The woman said the suspect, who was not named in the Cartersville police report, had called her Friday when she got out of jail and the pair met at the Microtel, 1348 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, where the victim was planning to stay.
According to the report, the two sat in the car talking for about 20 minutes when the victim took out cash and began counting it to pay for a room. The woman said the suspect grabbed the money and fled in the direction of Tarascos.
The suspect left in the area in a 2004 Nissan Altima. According to the victim, she followed the vehicle to Baker Road on Highway 41 in an attempt to get the tag number.
Witnesses stated they saw the suspect snatch the cash and flee the area.
Bartow 911 made contact with the suspect, who agreed to meet police at the Chevron but never showed.
Suspect falls from balcony running from cops
A two-story tumble didn’t slow a suspect fleeing police Friday.
Just after noon, Cartersville police were called to a domestic dispute at Ivy Mill Apartments, 51 Ridge Row Drive. The responding officers found Karen Kemp, 30, in the parking lot crying. The pair escorted the woman back to her apartment where they found a male suspect — later identified as the father of the woman’s child — and a strong odor of marijuana.
During the investigation, the officer reported a brown book bag allegedly containing a large, plastic bag of marijuana between the suspect’s legs. When asked to hand over the bag, the suspect fled out the balcony door.
The officer followed, ordering the man to stop. As the suspect jumped the second-story railing, the officer grabbed the waistband of the suspect’s shorts to keep the man from falling. A second officer attempted to assist but the shorts ripped, causing the man to fall.
The second officer deployed his taser but only one probe hit the suspect, according to the report, with the second officer giving chase to the suspect.
Police then called the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force, who arrived at the scene and took over the case. DTF advised charges would be taken and a warrant issued.
Kemp was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
Suspect gets away on foot, leaves bicycle
Following reports of suspicious persons near Fairview Street at the train tracks, a deputy stopped a man pushing a bicycle on Cassville Road at Fairview Street about 4 a.m. Sunday.
According to the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office report, the deputy stopped 26-year-old Gregory Owens, who was pushing a black BMX bike along the road.
When asked for his information, Owens allegedly said, “Don’t run me. I think I might be wanted. I don’t know if I am.”
Owens complied with the deputy’s request to place the bike on the ground and his hands behind his back, but the man fled when the officer went to detain him.
The deputy pursued the suspect for some distance, stopping because his vehicle was unsecured. Other units arrived, including CPD, but Owens was not located.
The bike was taken into evidence and warrants taken for obstruction of an officer.
