Mrs. Martha Knight Johnson, 93, of Summer Street, Adairsville, passed away at her residence on Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 2013.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Cartersville, May 14, 1920, daughter of the late William Sydney Knight and Bessie Culver Knight. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Noble Hill Johnson.

Survivors include a brother, Harvey C. Knight and wife Myrtice D. Knight of Cartersville; a niece, Angela Knight McKee and husband Rick McKee of Cartersville; a nephew, Timothy Knight and wife Beverly Knight of Gainesville; a great-niece, Sarah Tonsmeire of Cartersville; two great-nephews, Matthew Knight and wife Emily of Atlanta and Christopher Knight of Atlanta; special friend and caretaker, Joyce Colston of Adairsville; and several cousins.

Mrs. Johnson, or “Ms. Martha” as she was known to the community, worked for Georgia Power for 40 years in the Adairsville office until her retirement. In addition, she taught children’s Sunday school at Adairsville Baptist Church for 42 years. She loved to spend time with friends and travel. In fact, she and her husband Hill traveled extensively during their 66 years of marriage. Ms. Martha had a profound love for the town of Adairsville and used every opportunity to share its treasures with visitors. She served the community as a member of the Adairsville zoning board of appeals for many years. In addition, she was an active member of the Sans Souci Club, the Lions Club and the Red Hat Club. In recognition of Ms. Martha’s love for Adairsville, the funeral procession will be routed through the streets of her beloved hometown for a final farewell. Ms. Martha was a friend to all, and she will be sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m., at Adairsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Brown, the Rev. Jack Colwell and the Rev. Kenneth Ellison officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery. Pallbearers are Ballard Mauldin, Freddie Fletcher, Kenneth Bass, Matt Barton, Bradley Gilmore, Ronnie Self, Ronnie Evans, Thorton Adams and Evan King.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Barton Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Mrs. Johnson to the Adairsville Sans Souci Club, the Lions Club or Adairsville Baptist Church.
