To be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cartersville campus, the topics, ranging from Bartow County’s economic prospects to updates on business-related legal issues, are becoming increasingly important, said Director of Continuing Education George White.
“What we’ve basically tried to do — this panel is put on in conjunction with our Georgia Highlands College Continuing Education Advisory Panel. They also take registration, help us get out the word for it, but we try to interview people, talk with them about what are the issues they’d like to talk about,” he said. “Right now, all of a sudden, it appears we’re going from an employer’s job market to an employee’s job market. It’s happening pretty quick, especially in Bartow County and northwest Georgia, with all the jobs we’re fixing to get brought in here.”
A networking opportunity from 8:30 to 9 a.m. is planned to proceed welcoming remarks and then a panel on economic development in the region will be held with Melinda Lemmon, executive director of Cartersville-Bartow County Economic Development; Paul Sabin, CEO of the Bartow County College and Career Academy; and Gwen Dellinger, workforce development director of the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.
This year is the first time Dellinger has been involved with the seminar. She said the economic forecast was intended to help businesses better understand their competitive environment and what they could expect in terms of the regional hiring climate.
“So the issues were primarly centered around what our workforce needs and what specifically are the needs in Bartow County. So we have done some analysis of the types of job openings that there have been since January, because there is a lot of change going on, and what the skills would be to do that and how possibly to address that,” she said.
Additional panels throughout the day will focus on managing a diverse group of generations, with Danny Pickard of Chemical Products Corp.; how to attract and retain high quality talent, with Steve Hawkins, manager of organizational contract manufacturing at Shaw; and a legal update with Dan Murphy, a partner with Constangy, Brooks & Smith.
“We’ve got Steve Hawkins. He handles a lot of the contract employees, you know, manufacturing and training up at Shaw here in Cartersville and actually this whole area,” White said. “He’s going to talk about attracting people and retaining high quality talent. ... Certain talent is hard to get, especially supervision, lead people, and once you have them you want to try your best to keep them. He’s just going to talk about what you have to do to keep them happy so they’ll stay with you.”
Dellinger referenced the changes to hiring and on-the-job training laws that will affect businesses in the future as one other topic the seminar will tackle.
“Actually there is new legislation that is coming out that will impact the kinds of things that can be done, like apprenticeships are opening up, things like that, that people are trying to make it more job driven — what training is provided to folks and a lot of people are eligible for money that historically [they] might not have been,” she said.
The seminar’s cost is $59, which includes a provided lunch halfway through the program. If a company registers four employees, a fifth one can be added at no cost.
“What we’re doing is trying to be a good neighbor for the community and try to give them a little bit of knowledge about what to expect and how to react in it and try to keep your employees and keep them trained,” White said of the seminar.
