Mini-grant bolsters Bartow County’s car seat program

Bartow is among more than 100 Georgia counties to receive a Child Passenger Safety mini-grant. Announced by the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Injury Prevention Program Dec. 29, the grants are funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

“[I] was notified by the Department of Public Health on Dec. 29, 2017, that we had received a mini-grant for our car seat program,” said Brad Cothran, public information officer for Bartow County Emergency Medical Services. “… The grant will help BCEMS and other Bartow County partners to educate parents and caregivers on how to properly install and use car seats. We will receive about six car seats and three or more booster seats per month for one year.

“BCEMS will offer car seat inspections and provide car seats and booster seats to financially eligible families. BCEMS will soon be conducting car seat classes to these families. The seats will be available only to those who attend and complete the class. BCEMS has numerous car seat technicians to inspect anyone’s seat to ensure that it has been installed correctly and can be inspected at our headquarters office on Highway 20 behind The Hope Center. We at BCEMS through community outreach believe we can prevent injuries to the children of Bartow County. The GOHS released a report showing that since 2007 more than 344 Georgia children who were involved in crashes were saved because of car seats.”

Along with Bartow, the $229,670 award will be distributed amongst the following counties: Appling, Atkinson, Barrow, Ben Hill, Bibb, Bleckley, Bullock, Burke, Butts, Calhoun, Camden, Candler, Carroll, Catoosa, Chatham, Chattahoochee, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coffee, Colquitt, Crawford, Crisp, Dade, Dawson, Decatur, DeKalb, Dodge, Dougherty, Douglas, Early, Effingham, Elbert, Fannin, Fayette, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Glascock, Gordon, Grady, Greene, Gwinnett, Habersham, Haralson, Harris, Hart, Henry, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jeff Davis, Johnson, Jones, Lamar, Laurens, Lee, Liberty, Long, Lowndes, Lumpkin, Macon, Marion, McIntosh, Meriwether, Mitchell, Montgomery, Morgan, Murray, Muscogee, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Peach, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Pulaski, Rabun, Richmond, Rockdale, Schley, Seminole, Spalding, Stewart, Stephens, Sumter, Taliaferro, Tattnall, Taylor, Telfair, Tift, Toombs, Treutlen, Troup, Twiggs, Union, Upson, Walton, Ware, Washington, Wayne, Webster, Wheeler, White, Whitfield, Wilkinson and Worth.
